genapta’s products allow researchers to develop custom systems without the need for bulky and expensive microscope stages. Using the highly efficient optical designs all coupling is via a dry objective at a working distance of 1-2 millimetres.

Intrinsic to the design are the following benefits;

  • 100% of the available light is collected. This refers to both component colours and polarisations
  • The lasers and detectors are coupled into and out of the device using multi-mode telecoms fibers. Such coupling is very efficient and stable in the long term.
  • Utilising the intrinsic properties of optical fibers the device has characteristics of a confocal microscope without the normal loss of signal associated with such designs. As a result the degree of stray light rejection allows the devices to be operated open frame in both analogue and digital (photon counting) detection modes.
  • A mechanism for interface detection is built into all devices shipped by genapta. This allows customers to align the device to the surface of a micro-array, the middle of a fluid film under a cover slip or find the centre of a micro-fluidic channel. The system is robust and fast and can be incorporated into an automatic feedback loop for real-time adjustment of focussing.
  • The devices are constructed from monolithic bonded components obviating the need for adjustment throughout the life of the instrument.
  • The devices are compact: the complete optical head is palm sized and weigh less than 200 grams.

Using the intrinsic flexibility, genapta can make custom devices relatively simply. As an example the device can be configured for single channel excitation and three channel collection which could be used with 3 colours of quantum dots etc. Please contact us for more details
